Event description

Description

If you have not yet been to a Homoclimbtastic convention yet, picture this: a small, unassuming town in West Virginia covers itself in rainbow flags; a local rafting company opens its grounds to nearly 100 folks representing the LGBTQ+ community; the New River Gorge swarming with the most fabulous gaggle of sport-lead climbers imaginable; and, on Saturday, this gaggle can be found climbing one minute, jumping in the lake the next, and ending the night with a drag show/gear auction/dance party. Sound fun? Hop in.

SO WHAT IS THIS, REALLY?

Homoclimbtastic, if you haven’t gathered already, is the largest annual gathering of queer climbers in the world! Queer climbing groups from around the country and individuals from all over descend on Fayetteville, WV for a weekend of climbing, dancing, and frivolity. There’s something for everyone here. I almost forgot to mention that the New River Gorge is one of the largest, bestest climbing areas this side of the Mississippi. If you’re looking for some fun in the sun, pack your gear and an inflatable unicorn. It’s gonna get wet.

WHAT TO BRING

The New River Gorge contains sport and traditional lead routes. Make sure to bring whichever rack makes the most sense for your goals. And don’t forget a stick clip! The New has been bolted with the intention of always using a stick clip for the first clip. Helmets are highly advisable, but because it is not primarily a CRUX event, you’ll likely see some folks climbing without a helmet. Yikes!

WHO CAN ATTEND

I’m going to let the leaders of Homoclimbtastic explain this one

“Our conventions have no guides and no teachers. Thus, you MUST be an experienced outdoor climber, or be chaperoned by someone who is... If you don’t know how to clean a route, what a soft catch is, or why top roping on permanent gear is bad, you’ll need to train some more before joining the party. (Note that plenty of experienced climbers do bring less experienced friends just for hiking or top roping, and they all have a good time as well).”

In addition to registering on our event page, please fill out this form so the HC leadership knows you're coming. This is MANDATORY, so again, fill out this form if you are planning to attend Homoclimbtastic this year.

Homoclimbtastic is an independent convention, so whether you’re a CRUX member or not, we hope to see you down there! If you find yourself loving every minute of your time in West Virginia, consider becoming a member of CRUX to experience more queer climbing and queer community back home in New York! RIDESHARE

As you might imagine, getting to West Virginia is a bigger trip than any other we do. Some people choose to fly to Charleston, WV and drive from there. For most, though, sharing a 10-hour drive with a few friends is the best way down. Once you’ve RSVPed, you'll be emailed a link to the rideshare spreadsheet.
