Crowdsourcing Biomedical Research

Citizen science solutions with the Zooniverse

A half-day symposium exploring how online citizen science can be applied to biomedical research.

Technological advances of the 21st century have revolutionized data generation capabilities across many biomedical research domains. However, methods to effectively analyse these data frequently remain antiquated in comparison. One innovative approach to effectively process data is to perform distributed data analysis through engaging large numbers of volunteers online via citizen science platforms, such as the Zooniverse (www.zooniverse.org). This represents a type of crowdsourcing that harnesses the time, enthusiasm and pattern recognition abilities of volunteers to enable data analysis, and thus provides a means of facilitating research that would not be possible otherwise, while engaging the public in authentic research.

In this half-day symposium, we will hear from an expert panel who have been applying citizen science to a broad range of biomedical research questions;

  • Dr Helen Spiers, Biomedical Research Lead of the Zooniverse, University of Oxford and The Francis Crick Institute
  • Dr Martin Jones, Deputy Head of Microscopy Prototyping, The Francis Crick Institute
  • Dr Rasneer Sonia Bains, Phenotyping Technical Developer, MRC Harwell Institute
  • Dr Grant Miller, Zooniverse Project Manager, University of Oxford
  • Dr Philip Fowler, University Research Lecturer, University of Oxford
  • Dr Michele Darrow, Development Scientist, TTP Labtech
  • Professor Adam Taylor, Professor in Anatomy, Lancaster University
  • Professor Chris Lintott, Zooniverse PI, University of Oxford

This event is relevant to biomedical, medical, preclinical, clinical and health researchers at any stage of their career, as well as funders and policy makers. The programme will include talks from researchers leading citizen science projects with a biomedical focus, as well as a brief introduction to building an online citizen science project with the Zooniverse's Project Builder interface (https://www.zooniverse.org/lab)
