CROWD-SOURCING FOR PRODUCERS: HOW TO USE NEW TOOLS AND APPROACHES TO FUND AND FINISH YOUR PROJECT
Monday, April 30, 2012 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (EDT)
New York, NY
The crowdsourcing phenomenon has had many success stories in the entertainment industry in recent years, from Yair Landau’s crowd-sourced animation project in 2008, to the phenomenal rise of Kickstarter for crowd funding. Now, crowdsourcing is being used by major brands to make marketing decisions; motivate feature film and t.v. audiences, and create dedicated distribution channels. This session will examine different angles of crowdsourcing.
Mark Mori, filmmaker (PGA East member), ‘Bettie Page Reveals All’
Mark Mori has successfully crowd-sourced ideas, information, and funding for his Betty Page fan pic, ‘Bettie Page Reveals All,’ which is hitting the festival circuit in spring 2012. The film, after four years of crowdsourcing and social media production work, is a textbook example of the crowdsourcing phenomenon, leveraging Twitter, Facebook, live events, and fan engagement. Mark is a renowned documentary filmmaker, having received two Academy Award nominations for feature documentary films. He is a long-time member of PGA East.
Jose de Cabo, co-founder, Olapic
Jose de Cabo is the co-founder of the New York-based crowdsourcing platform Olapic, which enables brands and media companies to identify relevant users and pictures across different photo-sharing networks. Olapic clients include Mashable, New York Daily News, and the Chicago Tribune, among others. Jose was previously an international venture consultant. Based in New York City, he is a 2010 graduate of the Columbia Business School.
Lydia Dean Pilcher, filmmaker (PGA East member), ‘The Sisterhood of Night’
One of New York’s leading independent film producers, Lydia recently crowd-sourced funding for ‘The Sisterhood of Night,’ a modern retelling of the Salem witch trials, using Kickstarter. The 36-day funding period yielded $136,000 – well beyond the team’s original $100,000 goal. Known for her producing work on such films as the Golden Globe-nominated ‘You Don’t Know Jack;’ ‘The Darjeeling Limited,’ and ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley,’ as well as for her work with Mira Nair (‘The Namesake;’ ‘Amelia’), Lydia demonstrates the power of teamwork in crowdsourcing funds and awareness for launching a film project.
