This is an adventurous paddleboarding trip planned to cross the waters of the Gulfstream from Bimini in the Bahamas to West Palm Beach, Florida to raise money and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
The Crossing For a Cure showcases the connection between the ocean and CF - several years ago doctors noticed that CF patients who surfed had healthier lungs than those who did not. Armed with this knowledge, the CF Foundation invested $1.2 million to fund a study in Australia to find out if inhaling an aerosolized saltwater solution – almost twice as salty as the Atlantic Ocean — would help keep the lungs of CF patients healthy. Doctors determined that inhaling saltwater mist had a powerful effect on rehydrating the lining of the lungs and allowed CF patients to more easily eliminate bacteria-contaminated mucus. This discovery led researchers to develop a hypertonic saline solution, which CF patients around the world now inhale, mimicking a “surf session,” on a daily basis. This paddling challenge will highlight the important connection between the ocean and the beneficial health affects it provides.
