The Ministry of Climate Change and Forestry has the mandate of initiating and driving Climate Change mitigation activities in Cross River State. This mandate is premised on the leadership role which the State is expected to play in Climate Change mitigation and overall global ecosystem stability.
Cross River State holds over 58% of the last remaining tropical rainforest in Nigeria and is listed as one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world. However, the State is contending with illegal logging and poaching activities by unscrupulous elements who cause the depletion of this rich biodiversity.
To reverse this ugly trend, the Senator Prof. Ben Ayade Administration in 2015, introduced the Green Carnival to complement the state’s globally acclaimed Calabar Carnival. The government is also hosting a Global Summit on Climate Change and Green Entrepreneurship in April 2017.
