Description

CROwdsourced and COmputational rephotoGRAPHY - CroCoGraphy 2018

27 - 29 January, 2018 - Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

In conjunction with the 13th International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications - VISIGRAPP 2018

SCOPE

Crowdsourced and computational rephotography is a multidisciplinary subject, dealing with a broad range of computer vision, metadata, semantics and VGI techniques to estimate the viewpoint of old photographs in today’s images of the world. Aligning a historical photograph in a modern rephotograph (or vice versa) can serve as a remarkable visualization of the passage of time and can be used across a plethora of application domains (e.g., tourism, media and GLAM sector). The workshop welcomes contributions to theories, design and evaluation of volunteered and automatic rephotography (or a combination of both) and will provide an interactive platform with presentation and discussion opportunities for novel research, work in progress, and more general 'open problems' in rephotography and related research domains.

Topics:

Volunteered geographic information (VGI) and crowdsourcing rephotography Computer vision techniques for computational rephotography Semantic scene understanding Clustering of visually similar landscapes/scenes Architectural style/building type recognition Image geolocalization Geographic metadata enrichment and metadata-driven image analysis Computational efficient rephotography visualization techniques Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments / Change invariant scene matching (Mobile) Imaging for Cultural Heritage Learning invariant places / image features

CO-CHAIRS

Steven Verstockt
Ghent University - imec, IDLab
Belgium

Brief Bio
Steven Verstockt received his Master degree in Informatics from Ghent University in 2003. Following up on his studies in applied informatics, he began teaching Multimedia courses at Hogeschool Gent and at the end of 2007, he started a PhD on video fire analysis at the IDLab of the Department of Electronics and Information Systems of Ghent University - imec (Belgium). Since 2012 he worked as a post-doctoral researcher in this lab. From October 2014, he is appointed a tenure track position at the same lab. His current research focuses on Spatio-Temporal Extraction, Visualisation and Analysis tools for heterogeneous multimedia data exploration. His research team investigates methodologies and tools to improve the spatio-temporal (meta)data quality and querying process, and to optimize mapping, finding and analyzing data related to a specific place and time. He is the coordinator of the UGESCO project (Upscaling the Geo-temporal Enrichment, exploration and exploitation of Scientific COllections), which research topics are closely related to the workshop proposal.

Vahur Puik
Estonian Photographic Heritage Society
Estonia

Brief Bio
Vahur Puik has been working as photographer and then in several Estonian museums on positions related to exhibitions and photographic collections. As his academic background is cultural geography, he has been drawn to landscape issues in connection to both photography and museums. As a long time digital optimist he has been carefully following the global trends in digitising (photographic) heritage, participatory museum approach and crowdsourcing. Since the end of 2012, Vahur has been dedicated full time to developing Ajapaik.ee – a gamified crowdsourcing platform for geotagging and rephotographing historic pictures. In spring 2015 he created a new participatory tagging app Sift.pics.
