Event description

Task-based and procedure centric training methods have dominated our manufacturing industries for decades. Even in positions that require a high degree of performance related activities, a "follow the checklist" developmental learning method has been used to on-board and qualify workers. While not a perfect approach, operators still had the opportunity to learn on the job through repetition and practice- thus keeping people safe and the unit running.

Today, due to many factors (including advanced controls that focus on optimization and a high turnover in experience of personnel) this approach is not only ineffective but dangerously outdated. Newer operators will never have the opportunity to hone their skills "on the job" like their predecessors did. What is needed is a switch from simply knowing "how to work the process" to a deeper understanding of "how the process works".

To achieve this new approach, learning and development efforts have to start with a focus on core-competencies that identify and define the knowledge and skills required of the position. Once those core learning objectives are identified, corresponding learning activities must challenge the trainee to understand the how and why- allowing them to "think" through the learning experience.

This workshop is focused on identifying, exploring, and understanding the conceptual principles of critical thinking, how to design learning objectives that focus on core competencies, and the practical application of these techniques into learning exercises. A live process simulator will be used to demonstrate the practical migration to a new and more comprehensive learning environment.
