Event description

In an era of increasing polarization, fueled in part by a hyper-partisan and fragmented media landscape, communities need new and innovative ways to find meaningful connections that promote critical engagement and understanding. This webinar presents a number of such projects that have been developed in Liberty City, a historically marginalized community in Miami's urban core, with a deep and complex history of cultural and racial politics. The projects have involved both university and high school students, community activists, and local media producers. These projects were built around the core belief that engaged storytelling focused on conscious-building pedagogy and digital media production presents at least one avenue towards creating deeper empathies among diverse and varied populations. The presentation will introduce the initiatives that have been created, reflect honestly about the promises and pitfalls of such efforts, as well as provide some background on one teacher's journey through the complicated field of community engagement and present some takeaways for applying lessons learned within other spaces and contexts.
