Event Details

Join us Nov 20 at Avid where FRONTLINE's Associate Director of Broadcast, Chris Fournelle, and Post-Production Supervisor, Megan McGough, will illustrate media management strategies and workflows from acquisition through broadcast. On the recent fast turn-around documentary "Egypt in Crisis" Chris was on the ground in Cairo as pro-Morsi supporters clashed with government forces.  He and Megan will demonstrate how FRONTLINE plans for situations like this, the tools used to get it done, and some of the lessons learned along the way.
They will cover:
  • How FRONTLINE ingested and stored the source media and the reasoning behind decisions like when to edit with AMA and when to transcode.
  • How the team in Cairo simultaneously shared the media with the teams in Boston, New York, and Washington, DC, and what tools they used.
  • File-based organization protocols that make post-production more efficient--both in time and money.
  • Post-production strategies that minimize delays during a hectic week of post when there are several simultaneous deliverables.
  • How to handle captioning in the Avid timeline, including making last minute changes.
  • How FRONTLINE produces its file-based broadcast masters and how they are delivered to PBS.
  • Guidelines for file-based archival workflows, on-going struggles, and future plans.

 Our raffle will include:

a 2014 BAVUG Membership

a free 2 or 3 day class from Future Media Concepts

plus a copy of Avid Media Composer v7!

and other great prizes!
Due to the capacity of the room, you must be registered to attend!
Unregistered attendees will not be guaranteed admittance.

About Frontline:

Since 1983, FRONTLINE has served as American public television’s flagship public affairs series. Hailed upon its debut on PBS as “the last best hope for broadcast documentaries,” FRONTLINE’s stature over 30 seasons is reaffirmed each week through incisive documentaries covering the scope and complexity of the human experience.

Over the years, FRONTLINE has built a reputation for powerful reporting that tackles the tough, controversial, and complex stories that shape our times. From Martin Smith’s on-the-ground reporting in Obama’s War to Michael Kirk’s investigation into the hidden history of the financial crisis; from Ofra Bikel’s examination of America’s racial divide over the O.J. Simpson verdict, to special reports like The Age of AIDS or Bush’s War, and provocative journeys like Hedrick Smith’s search for the answer to the question, Is Wal-Mart Good for America? FRONTLINE gives its award-winning journalists and filmmakers the time needed to thoroughly research a story and the time on-air to tell the story in a compelling way.

The Boston Avid User Group (BAVUG) is a community of Avid professionals, students and enthusiasts from the New England area who meet monthly to share positive experiences and concerns to learn new skills relating to Avid solutions and related technology.

The BAVUG acknowledges Avid's influential contributions to digital filmmaking and provides opportunities for members to remain on the cutting edge of this revolution. BAVUG is committed to advancing professional growth in the field of digital editing. Guest speakers from the creative and technical communities share their expertise by showcasing new solutions, case studies and completed projects. All presentations include time for members' questions. The meetings also provide a networking opportunity for members.

The BAVUG meetings are open to anyone with an interest in digital media, nonlinear editing, motion graphics, filmmaking and multimedia production using Avid and related solutions. We always request that people pre-register for an event if they plan to attend as it helps us estimate how many seats are required and ensures we'll have enough food/drinks for everyone.  On occasion, we also may ask for a donation at the time of pre-registration.  Non-registered attendees are always welcome, but may be charged a fee at the door.  Official Members and Employees of our Sponsors are exempt from the door charge.

At each monthly meeting, industry leaders and enthusiasts will present different aspects of digital production and post production. Meetings are informal and attendees are given the opportunity to ask questions related to the presentations. Many meetings will also feature product giveaways. The BAVUG meetings are an ideal place to network with peers and to share editing experiences both good and bad.

The Boston Avid User Group has been in existence since 2004. The group began holding monthly meetings in February 2005. The meetings happen the second Wednesday of each month, at 6:30 pm, with the exception of the months of April, July and December. Occasionally the date, time and location may change so please check the site for updated meeting information.

If you are on our mailing list, you will be notified of the meeting date, topics and location. If you aren't on our mailing list, you can join now.
