Residential Facility Class 2 (Adult Care Facilities) staff members and other housing providers who treat individuals suffering from mental illness in out of home facilities require skills that bring calm while managing mental health crises and aggressive behaviors while maintaining a safe treatment environment. This requires knowledge of best practices in crisis management with knowledge of legal and state mandated resources .

This training focuses on creating a safe environment and providing for an understanding of risk behaviors, behavioral escalation, and trauma and violence prevention. A “core strategy” approach which centers on proactive de-escalation, data driven, and client centered interventions, debriefing and crisis/safety planning.


Understand the core strategies of creating a “violence free/coercion free” environment

Understand the emotional and mental illness factors that can lend themselves to a crisis

Understand proactive interventions to a crisis

Understand de-escalation and debriefing and the creation of crisis plans

Understand the impact of suicide behavior and the factors that contribute to it

Increase awareness of Ohio MH law and knowledge of resources


Discuss what mental health crisis entails

Discuss/review trauma and mental illness symptoms which may lead to a crisis

Discuss antecedent interventions, behavioral interventions, problem solving skills and recovery interventions

Discuss aspects of suicide prevention and safety planning

Discuss empowerment and engagement principles

Target Audience: Residential Facility Class 2 Providers, Recovery Housisng Providers, Permanent Supported Housing Providers.

Certificate of Attendance will be given or mailed at the end of the training for those needing 6 hours mental health hours towards Licensure and Certification requirements.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs): 6 hours of Continuing Education Units for Social Workers, Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Ohio RN and LPN's. 6 hours of Mental Health training for Licensure and Certification for Residential Facility Class 2 Providers and staff.

OhioMHAS Continuing Education Committee is an approved provider of Continuing Education for RNs and LPNs for the Ohio Board of Nursing and has awarded 6.0 CE contact hours per OBN003 92-2709CO.

OhioMHAS has been approved as a provider of Continuing Professional Education credit by the Ohio Counselor, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapist Board. 6.0 CPEs have been awarded to Social Workers per RSX088902-2987CO and to Counselors per RCX068915-2954CO.

Certificates will ONLY be given to attendees who attend the WHOLE training (6 hours of mental health training for licensure and certification; 6 hours CEU for SW, Counselors, RN and LPN). No adjusted/partial continuing education credit hours will be given for this training.

Please note that if you are seeking CEU credits, this training is prioritized for housing providers and their staff. Content will be geared towards these housing providers.
