Event Details

Civil Rights, Civil Disobedience, & Civil Discourse is the theme for Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago's Annual Conference for Teachers in Civics, Law, and Government. 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of a significant period in the civil rights movement. During this period, people struggled for social, legal, political, and cultural changes. In many instances resorting to civil disobedience to protest injustice. Recent events have caused people to question whether our civil discourse will ever be possible again. In the midst of heated political campaigns, it is easy to forget how essential civil discourse is in a democratic society, and how the norms and practices of civil discourse provide the lifeblood of democracy to solve our nation's problems. In our time, the fight for civil rights continues to provide a renewed urgency for civil discourse.

The conference features: content-intensive concurrent workshops focused on the civil rights movement, the U.S. Supreme Court, Civil Disobedience & Civil Discourse, and Teaching Methodologies, including dynamic workshops with content experts on legal and political issues, interactive teaching methods, and innovative materials for the classroom.

Held at the Holiday Inn Chicago West, located in Itasca, IL, this is an excellent opportunity for teachers to share experiences, best practices, strategies, and curriculum; and join in a broader conversation about current issues. The conference includes a lunch banquet ideal for networking.

2017 & 2018 Teachers of the Year Awards Presented

The 2017  & 2018 Barbara J. O’Donnell and Edward J. Lewis Awards for Illinois Law-Related Education Teachers of the Year will be announced at the conference.

The O’Donnell Award for high school teachers is named for the late Barbara J. O’Donnell, a superb teacher and former director of the Center for Law Justice at Chicago’s Lincoln Park High School.

The Lewis Award is given to an elementary teacher in memory of Edward J. Lewis II, an outstanding teacher and partner at the law firm of Jenner & Block LLP who chaired CRFC’s Lawyer Advisory Committee.

The winners are selected by a CRFC Board committee, and receive a plaque and financial award to support their classroom LRE activities.
