Join our excellent volunteers for an entertaining and informative 2.5-hour guided walk on a portion of the Bird Rookery Swamp trails near Naples, FL.

Learn the history, see wildlife and enjoy the view.These guided walks are led by CREW's outstanding volunteer naturalists.

See below for the dates each naturalist leads his/her guided walks.

 Wednesdays (9:00 - 11:30 AM) - November through April

  • George Luther-is an award-winning naturalist, a master storyteller, and a devoted CREW volunteer. A retired public safety official and firefighter, George works year-round to help monitor and maintain the trails at Bird Rookery Swamp (and elsewhere at CREW) and to provide exemplary programs for visitors. 

2nd & 4th Tuesdays (9-11:30) - November through April

4th Saturday (9-11:30) - November through April

  • Bobby McLoughlin- Bobby has been a Collier County resident for almost 5 years. He discovered CREW after a friend (also a CREW volunteer) suggested he volunteer to enhance his love of hiking and learning about everything native to SWFL. Prior to his Florida life, he was an NYC Fire Officer & then post-9/11, a Sr. Chief Petty Officer with the USCG.

9 - 11:30 AM - February 9 & 23; March 9, 16 & 30; April 13

  • Jack Shine- Jack is a retired physician who lives most of the year on Cape Cod where he volunteers at the Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center. He is also a naturalist and information volunteer at the Appalachian Club’s Highland Center, near Mt Washington. He has been wintering in Southwest Florida for the past 6 years enjoying hiking, biking, and kayaking as he learns about the flora, fauna and natural history of Florida.

9-11: 30 AM - February 2 & 16; March 2 & 23; April 6

  • Chrissy Podos- Chrissy is a resident of Naples and has been a CREW Trust volunteer for 3 years. She has a masters in Botany and Ecology from Michigan State University and has previously worked for The Nature Conservancy, a global conservation organization. Chrissy frequently will be found enjoying the CREW trails with her two children. Her gentle style will have you feeling right at home at CREW.

The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail is part of the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (owned by the South Florida Water Management District). It includes a 1500 ft. boardwalk and nearly 12 miles of raised trails on old railroad trams. The cypress/maple swamp is home to wading birds, owls, deer, bear, panther, bobcat, limpkins, and much more. 

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing, bring water to drink. Sunscreen/hat are advisable. Cameras and binoculars are optional but recommended.

Registered participants get priority. Walk-ins welcome if there is space.

If you cannot attend the hike for which you registered, please call 239-657-2253 or request a cancellation here on this site 24 hours before the walk is scheduled to begin. 



These hikes are free, but donations to the CREW Trust are greatly appreciated on the day of the hike, here on this site or online at




Is there an age limit for the event?

This guided walk is for all ages.

What are the parking/facilities  like at the trails?

There is a gravel parking lot at the trailhead. There is one portable restroom at the trailhead.

What are the trails like?

The trails are mostly grassy/sandy ground level trails with some boardwalk sructures over wet areas. Expect seasonlly wet/muddy places on the trails during the rainy season (July - November). 

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Yes. You may give your spot to someone else. Be sure to change the information on your registration page or call us at 239-657-2253.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes, you may update your registration information up to 24 hours before the event.

Do I have to bring a printed ticket to the event?

No. We do not issue print tickets. Simply check in with the event leader at the time of the event.


Directions to Bird Rookery:

From Fort Myers/Naples: From I-75, take exit 111 and turn east (away from Naples) on Immokalee Road (CR 846). Travel 11.4 miles and turn left onto Shady Hollow Blvd. (One mile past the Oil Well Rd stoplight – Shady Hollow is where Immokalee Rd goes from 4-lane to 2-lane). Go to the end of Shady Hollow (approx 2.4 miles). Parking lot is on the right.

From Immokalee: Travel west (toward Naples) on CR 846 (Immokalee Road) for approx. 16.5 miles. Turn right on Shady Hollow Blvd. Travel 1.5 miles north to parking area/gate.

CREW Land & Water Trust

The CREW Land & Water Trust was established in 1989 as a nonprofit organization to coordinate the land acquisition, land management, and public use of the 60,000-acre Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed. We work closely with our partners, the South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to ensure the protection of the watershed. This watershed, the largest intact watershed in south Florida, straddles Lee and Collier Counties and provides aquifer recharge, natural flood protection, water purification, preservation of wildlife habitat, and public recreation.  CREW's majestic 5,000-acre marsh is the headwaters for the entire watershed.
