Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Connect with leading innovators from across the Twin Cities at Lean Startup Circle of Minnesota.

This month's event: What can a startup learn from a rock and roll band?

Plenty, according to Neal Tillotson, a veteran of three education-based startups over the last 18 years, and 2,000+ live performances in East Coast rock and blues venues during the 1970s/1980s.

Now launching his fourth edtech startup—Filmbook—Neal reflects on a few of his key beliefs about managing creativity in the service of commerce. Although he didn’t realize it at the time, he learned the most essential lessons during his early days traveling around with his best friends in that leanest of startups, a regional rock and roll band.

Learn what drives the creative collaborators who make the words, pictures and videos that drive your product or your message. Even if your product or service contains no creative content, your marketing will.

What Business Are We In, Anyway?
Every band that starts its career playing the local club scene soon faces the existential question: Are we making music or selling beer? Thirty-five years after confronting this question in his first real band, Neal faced a similar question as his edtech startup was in the throes of a critical creative decision.

Cartwheels in The Sandbox
All great creative relies on rigorous structure. A successful three-and-a-half-minute pop song follows one of the tightest functional specifications ever devised. When any creative structure breaks down, things can start to fail fast for the business and the people that depend on it.

Turn Me Up To 11
Everybody wants to hear their part louder in the mix, but everybody can’t be louder than everybody else. Do you sometimes find yourself acquiescing to the loudest voice in the room? Setting some standards up front will help you control the volume wars.

Register now to learn:

• How to define what business you’re in to help direct all creative efforts toward the right goals, right out of the gate and at every stage of your growth.

• How to draw the boundaries and let your people go wild within them—a key skill you need to develop if you want to keep your hitmakers happy.

How to let everyone have a voice while still maintaining the right level of creative control over your product.
