PORTLAND SPEAKER: NELSON LOWRY, LAIKA SUPERVISING PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Nelson Lowry graduated with a degree in painting from Maine College of Art and immediately ventured to New York City to pursue a career in theater and television.
He worked with director Julie Taymor on the stage musical The Lion King and served as Art Director for Michael Curry Designs and also Will Vinton Studios. He contributed to twenty two episodes of The PJs, an Eddie Murphy Imagine Entertainment/Touchstone Pictures/Will Vinton Studios stop-motion TV series and won an Emmy® Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation. He also received an Annie Award nomination.
Following three years on The PJs, Nelson went to England for seven years, working in London on two Academy Award® nominated productions: Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (Art Director) and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, for which he personally received the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Production Design. His credits also include Fred Claus (Digital Effects Artist) and Sunshine (Visual Effects Matte Artist).
After returning to Portland, Nelson most recently served as Production Designer on LAIKA’s stop-motion feature ParaNorman (in theaters August 17) and Production Designer on a content collaboration for Sony with Wes Anderson and LAIKA/house. Currently, he serves as Supervising Production Designer for LAIKA and is working on the studio’s next animated feature.
This month’s event will be hosted by the NW Film Center, in the Whitsell Auditorium at the Portland Art Museum. Established in 1971, the Northwest Film Center is a regional media arts resource and service organization founded to encourage the study, appreciation, and utilization of the moving image arts, foster their artistic and professional excellence, and to help create a climate in which they may flourish.
