About this event

10-Week Course For Beginners: Fiction

Thoughtful and critical discussions on practice will be followed by group and individual writing exercises to practice the techniques discussed. Each week a Suggested Reading is given to accompany the session but is not vital to the class. For the essentials of prose, we will move through specific areas of craft as follows:

*Classes can be individually booked at any time*

Week one: How to Have Ideas - Monkeys With Typewriters, S. Thomas

Week two: How to Plot - Into the Woods, J. Yorke

Week three: Characterisation - Bird by Bird, A. Lamott

Week four: What do we want from our stories? - From Where You Dream, R. Butler

Week five: Detail - On Writing, S. King

Week six: Editing - The Elements of Style, Strunk and White

Weeks seven, eight, and nine: Workshops

Week ten: Group Readings and a Guest Speaker TBA

At the end of the full 10-week, course participants will have a thorough understanding of the basics of their craft and the tools to progress to the next stage of their projects.

Sessions will take place in person and will last approximately two hours. Sessions will be led by Dr. Charlotte Hanson (University of Kent, AFHE), editor, author, and poet.

Course start dates are as follows:
