CREATIVE WORKSHOPS AND COCKTAILS AT THE OTHER ART FAIR CHICAGO

This May 16th - 19th The Other Art Fair present a series of creative workshops in Chicago led by local artists and makers. Tap into your inner creative as you and your friends enjoy a unique workshop experience in the heart of The Other Art Fair, washed down with delicious cocktails whipped up by the fair's bar experts.

Workshop Schedule:

Thursday May 16th:
6pm-7pm - Experimental Cocktail Making with Carley Gaskin ('Most Imaginative Bartender 2018') - no advanced booking required

7:30pm-9:30pm - Natural Painting with Britni Mara - Sold Out!
Learn how to create your own eco-friendly, non-toxic and sustainable paint from a local Chicago artist. You'll get to work on watercolor paper to create your own naturally derived masterpiece, all while sipping on your complimentary gin cocktail!

Friday May 17th:
5pm - 6pm - Terrarium Cluster Workshop with Noble Terraria - Sold Out!
Build your own cluster of small, live terrariums using mosses and live microgreens. Your host, Laura Mae Noble of Noble Terraria, will guide you through the process. You’ll create a gorgeous little collection of 2-3 true terrariums, within minimalist glass vessels chosen from among our various vessels on hand. All supplies, instructions, and encouragement for future planting adventures are included. Green thumbs, and those new to houseplant gardening are all welcome!

7pm - 9pm - Candle Making with Milton and Margies - Sold Out!
Transform your favorite mug into an adorable soy wax candle in an interactive candle-making class. The class, led by Chicago candle-maker Jessica Snively, creator of Milton and Margie’s Soy Wax Candles, teaches you everything you need to know to make a soy wax candle in an adorable vintage mug. Throughout the process, you’ll create your own signature fragrance from a blend of scented soy-based oils and experiment with oils ranging from floral (e.g., Lavender and Juniper) to natural (e.g., Cedar and Eucalyptus) and sweet (e.g., Buttercream and Fudge Brownie) to rugged (e.g., Leather).

Saturday May 18th:
12:30pm - 2:30pm - Drawing in Anamorphosis Workshop with Kate Lynn Lewis - Sold Out!
Learning to draw in anamorphosis is a technique that both activates the logical mind and the imagination. While your brain attempts to make sense of an illogical scenario, your curiosity sparks the side of you that needs to know why or how this could be. This workshop is designed to teach attendees how to distort an object or scene of their choosing and use gridding techniques to draw it so that it appears as if it's 3D. This is the magician’s behind-the-scenes of the visual art variety and aims to pique interest and imagination using optical play. Kate’s illustrative style involves detailed line work, so she will go through shading techniques that she uses in ink as opposed to graphite. All of the tools will be provided to make your own anamorphic drawing that you can walk away with!

3:30pm - 5:30pm - Paper Sign Lettering with Shelby Rodeffer - Sold Out!
Through guided and independent practice, this workshop will cover effective sign layout, making patterns and transfer methods, basic styles, and more. Creating a hand-painted sign starts with a message that is then built into a layout and pencil sketch. With an understanding of how letters are drawn, students will then learn the basics for building their brush skills.

Sunday May 19th:

11:30am - 1:30pm -
Activism Embroidery with Badass Cross Stitch - Sold Out!
Shannon Downey, better known as Badass Cross Stitch, is a community organizer disguised as a fiber artist and craftivist. She will be leading a badass workshop inviting participants to learn to stitch, consider their personal narratives, and inspire personal activism.

2pm - 4pm - Draw, Carve and Print: Block Printing with Lizzie from Rare Press - Sold Out!
Lizzie will lead participants in creating an image on paper, transferring the image to a soft rubber block, carving the block, and printing! Attendees will have a 4 x 6” block to work with, and can create one (or more) small stamps of their choice; abstract, repeat patterns, small portraits, or text-based blocks will all be possible. Different types of paper will be provided for experimentation. For this workshop, quick-dry stamp pads will be used to ensure that attendees can transport their pieces without smudging. Detailed information about materials will be provided if participants are interested in purchasing their own supplies or pursuing blockprinting.
