Event description
Engaging in creativity and joy to help us cultivate the community we all see in our care communities and at home.

About this Event

Becoming relational with others is the first step towards providing the best care we can possible provide. Creative Engagement is the core of that process. Thank you for your consideration in this Creative Engagement and Dementia online course.

My name is Kathryne Fassbender. I am a dementia and creative engagement specialist, and I am also the granddaughter of someone who lived with vascular dementia. I am here to help you along the dementia journey.

“The arts make up a valuable difference on our health, well-being, and our ability to participate more actively in the community.” - Jane Chu, Former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

This course has been developed throughout my time working in long-term care. For the first time, I am offering this course online, attempting to take what is done in our care communities and move it into the digital space. Together we will explore how to become relational with individuals with dementia using creative engagement, and once a relationship has been established, we will look at how to add depth to the programs we already offer in our care communities and how to create new programs that fulfill a range of needs and desires. The course will end with us building an understanding of dementia.

I have laid out the course this way because I want you to forget about dementia, and live in the freedom to create and be visionaries in care. Once we have a foundation of creativity we can adapt to the needs and abilities of those we serve, no matter where they are on the journey of dementia.

This course was created to help you, Life Enrichment Specialists, CNAs, Home Health Aids, and other care partners both family and professional! The information is backed up by research, experience, and reflection.

Research has shown that the arts, and through that creative engagement, has increased in community, independence, and has reduced the need for medication, falls, and depression. NEA (2013) Arts and Aging White Paper, Cohen, et al. (2006)

The course is a blend of video, blog posts, community questions, and office hours, and while I have played it out to be completed over 5 weeks, it is done at your own pace. Once you sign up, you can expect an email from me within 24 hours that will include links to the videos, a course workbook, and a sign up form for office hours. To successfully complete this course you will have watched all 6 videos, filled out your workbook and worked to implement what we are exploring together, and completed 2 office hours. At the end of the course you will received documentation of completion as well as a referral code to share with co-workers, friends, and family.

Let us work to help others live a joyful, hopeful, beautiful life with dementia, connected to their community. Let us create our shared story.

About Dementia Letters Project

Becoming relational with individuals with dementia is the most important element to helping all living with dementia live well, and wealthy in community. We cannot provide the best care possible without first becoming relational. By communicating through words, body, emotions, and creativity we allow ourselves to discover our shared story.  Let us find and share that story.

Dementia Letters Project was formed out of a program I had developed that involved letter writing with and for individuals with dementia. I have since blended that specific program with my professional work as a dementia and creative engagement specialist and the product of that merger what we know as the Dementia Letters Project today. I, Kathryne Fassbender, am and independent contractor work to help education, support and serve all walking the dementia journey. I offer both online and in-person training programs, facilitate and develop life enrichment programs for families and care communities, and I offer support to care partners (both family and professional) in anyway they need support. Projects that now fall under this uqblress include a podcast, St. Dymphna Ministry, my work as a Purple Angel Ambassador, and a Patreon page that helps fund programming and training for those who cannot afford to otherwise expand their work.
