Creating Swoon-Worthy Landscapes and Gardens Without Irrigation
Event Information
About this Event
This workshop will open new worlds to participants by exploring how it is possible to create amazing landscapes and gardens without irrigation systems - in both mediterranean and continental climates.
Through a series of interactive activities, we'll first lay a foundation by looking at how plants are able to surivive long periods of drought. Then we'll explore the results of two irrigation-free pilot landscapes - one in California and one in Minnesota - and the long-term data collected on actual (as opposed to perceived ) water needs of plants and how this data translates into learning lessons for all of us (i.e., everyone from newbie to seasoned gardeners). We'll finally explore planting and watering techqniues, as well as tips for site prep, that can make irrigation-free landscapes and gardens thrive while keeping maintenance to a minimum.
Ultimately, participants should leave the workshop with a better sense of not just how landscapes without irrigation are possible (a common misperception is that they are impossible or that they will look half-dead) but also how we can easily incorporate this knowledge and techniques into our own landscapes and gardens.
While we will be looking in part at numbers and data, the presentation will place equal emphasis on visuals, as, at the end of the day, these landscapes need to read as beautiful and not as science experiments (even if they are!).
