Description

image: Lung Ta Runs with the Wind (c) Judy Demchuk

See the quiet of the mountain top so high above the earth. The silence, the wind, the only sound is the fluttering of last year’s prayer flags; once vibrant and colorful; now only faded pieces of cloth on a rope suspended to the next mountain top. Last year’s blessings, prayers, mantras, wishes, hopes, and visions have been slowly dispersed to the community and the land over the last year, as the flags are fading. It is time to begin to go inside ourselves as we gather the last of the fruits of our labors for the year. It is time to contemplate the ending of the growing cycles and prepare for the approach of quiet introspective time of winter.
What does Community mean to you? What are you looking forward to the future? What hopes, prayers, visions, wishes, blessings do you have for the coming year for yourself, your communities, the world?

The tradition of Prayer Flags, especially in Tibet, consists of using colorful pieces of cloth and decorating them with images and words that convey the hope for good luck, growth, prosperity, and all other blessings. These flags are strung together and put in places in nature like mountain tops, also on Buddhist temples, or on village homes anywhere it is felt that it would be beneficial for the community. They are left out to weather and fade until the next year when they are replaced with new flags and new prayers for the coming year.

Join us in this Prayer Flags workshop. Kristen will briefly talk about some of the history and traditions around Prayer Flags, then we will make our own Pray Flags. At the end of the Workshop you will have the option of taking the Prayer Flags home with you, or displaying them at LFAC while the current show is continuing and then taking them home. Supplies will be provided. No experience necessary. Also, consider bringing a snack to share. This workshop is inspired by Judy Demchuk, contributing artist for the current Show, Art: The Language of Community.
