What makes a work of literary fiction impossible to put down? Often, the way that a story is told is as important as the story itself. In this class, we will discuss methods for crafting voice-driven fiction in which the storytelling voice itself is a force that creates tension, emotion, and surprise in the reader. By reading the work of writers such as Ottessa Moshfegh, Rachel Cusk, and Julie Otsuka, we will explore a variety of techniques for creating irresistible first-person narrators. Then we will practice applying those techniques to our own fiction. Come ready to experiment with your voice(s) as a writer.
