Creating Data Art with Processing

September 28 - November 09
Thursdays, 6pm - 9pm
7 class sessions + Student Exhibit on November 18

$250 per student

ABOUT THIS CLASS

Explore the world of data and art with artist James Pricer. This class walks through the process transforming large sets of data, using Processing, into beautiful abstract visual artwork.

You will learn to create visuals from a variety of datasets—from country happiness data to crime data—and to optimize the visual appearance of the output to create a beautifully printed final work.

This is a great introduction to Processing and data-driven art—perfect for anyone interested in data, design, generative art, geometric abstraction, quantified self, or minimalism.

After completing this class, you will have all the tools you need to find manageable data sets, import them into Processing, manipulate the visualization, and prepare final files for print output.

Create visual poetry from the data surrounding us every day!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

In this course you will:

Week 1: Introduction to data art + Processing

DATA ART vs DATA VISUALIZATION

Data visualization and data art differ in purpose and design. The goal of data visualization is to help viewers quickly, concisely, and correctly understand data. In contrast, data art offers entertainment and aesthetics. This class is focused on data art and creating highly abstract visuals with a narrative and affective aesthetic. Our goal is to visually express what the data is telling us on cognitive and emotional levels—to give a qualitative feel of the nature of the data.
