Course Description

Instructor Antonia Graham, MPA, ENV SP

This course will focus on the implementation and strategic thinking that is required to implement a Sustainability Plan. Too often, we write a plan and have the greatest intentions of implementing all of the metrics only to have these ideas fall flat because of politics, organizational culture, or lack of support from the top. This course will teach you how to incorporate storytelling and systems thinking into a strategic plan that gets your plan implemented and enables you to move the needle further and faster to create a more sustainable community.

How do you create your strategy? Well it’s actually really simple. Think about this: Tens of thousands of years ago, we were telling each other stories. Stories are what convinced cavemen to go hunt, to go and search for new hunting grounds, they are what taught us about religion, and they were our first recollections of history. Even when we are sleeping our minds talk to us... they use our own narrative to form dreams. So when crafting your own strategy keep in mind that story is more influential than data. Data is boring, who wants to look at charts about how the planet is warming? But, if you hear a story about a small island nation that is sinking and how the people are suffering, that will resonate with people more. Stories are what create power - these narratives shape our decision making processes and change how we think about something or someone. You do not need a formal position of leadership when you know the power of story. A story is a form of mental imprint that can mold perceptions.

A city is a system and when you understand the interconnectedness of the system, you are better able to communicate the mission of the system. Systems thinking coupled with storytelling will enable you to engage your stakeholders and create a strategic plan to move your Sustainability Plan forward.

This course will teach you how to be a successful Chief Storytelling Officer so that you can implement your Sustainability Plan.
