The Women and Peacebuilding Affinity Group invites you to join us for the next Conversations with Extraordinary Women dialogue: Creating a New Future for Syria: A Conversation with Khawla Wakkaf. Khawla Wakkaf, Syrian Attorney and L.L.M and legal fellow with Women Enabled International, will share her experiences defending human rights, advocating for women's contributions to the peace process, and using the law to shape Syria's future.

BIOGRAPHY

Khawla Wakkaf is a Syrian Attorney and L.L.M and a Legal Fellow with Women Enabled International. Through her research with the Syrian Accountability Project, Khawla helped document war crimes to assist a future prosecution team in obtaining justice for the victims of the Syrian Conflict. Since 2010, Khawla helped deliver humanitarian aid to help people from all over the world, through serving with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the American Red Cross. Khawla served as a first responder during the Syrian conflict and helped deliver aid to hot zones.

Since her arrival in the U.S. in 2012, Khawla has been involved in many humanitarian efforts trying to alleviate the suffering in her community. She served as the International Services lead and the disaster training coordinator at the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan chapter. In 2017 Khawla received the OSF Civil Society Professional Program Award for her work with Women Enabled International and currently serves as WEI’s representative to the U.S. Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security. With WEI, Khawla has drafted submissions to United Nations entities and otherwise supports WEI’s work to advance the human rights of women and girls with disabilities.
