Overview

Let's dive into meaningful conversations about diversity and inclusion in therapy at our event!

Join My Crossing Paths Training Center and Erica Korto on November 14th, 2025 from 11am-2pm for this online training.

This work provides a comprehensive framework for therapists to intentionally and effectively broach race, ethnicity, and culture within therapeutic relationships. The concept of broaching refers to the counselor’s consistent and ongoing attitude of openness, curiosity, and willingness to explore and discuss cultural identities and experiences, especially as they relate to oppression, privilege, and systemic inequities.

Key themes include:

  • Therapist self-awareness: Emphasizes the importance of understanding one's own cultural identity, biases, and privilege to avoid unintentionally reinforcing harm.
  • Client-centered cultural engagement: Encourages therapists to acknowledge and invite conversations about the client’s cultural identity, rather than avoid or minimize it.
  • Relational safety and trust: Shows how broaching strengthens the therapeutic alliance and fosters deeper emotional safety. Particularly for clients from marginalized backgrounds.
  • Cultural humility and responsiveness: Highlights the need for therapists to remain teachable, accountable, and adaptive in cross-cultural encounters.
  • Practical strategies: Offers clinical examples, reflective prompts, and structured approaches for integrating broaching into therapy sessions with sensitivity and skill.
