Create Compelling Characters

Join bestselling author Isobelle Carmody in this six-hour intensive on creating characters who draw readers in and don't let them go. Relevant for writers of all genres, discover the secrets of creating strong and believable characters that will build connection with readers.

This workshop will cover:

  • The best methods for developing characters;
  • How to create effective internal and external dialogues; and
  • How to build characters that are multidimensional, interesting and real.
  • Talk about and demonstrate slipstream - a technique that engages both the modes of realism and the fantastic in a way that can be used in realist and fantastic writing to engage philosophical and ethical questions.

About the Tutor

Isobelle Carmody is a well known Australian author who has written many novels and short stories for children and adults and has a host of award winning novels to her credit. She began the first of her highly acclaimed Obernewtyn Chronicles while she was still at high school and worked on it while completing a Bachelor of Arts and then a journalism cadetship. Obernewtyn was accepted by the first publisher she sent it to and went on to be shortlisted in the "Older Readers" section of the CBC Book of the Year Award. The series and her short stories have established her at the forefront of fantasy writing in Australia.

After living in Europe for more than a decade, Isobelle now divides her time in Australia between her home on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, and Brisbane, where she is currently completing a PhD at the University of Queensland.

The last book in The Kingdom of the Lost series, The Velvet City will be published in July this year.

About the Venue

Harry Hartog Booksellers' ANU store, 153-11 University Avenue:

https://services.anu.edu.au/files/guidance/ANU%20Campus%20Map%202019.pdf

This Harry Hartog ANU store is located just beside the Kambri Precinct. Please just be aware that it is a very new building, and will not show up very accurately on Google Maps. Please refer to the map in the link above to help you find your way. The Harry Hartog ANU phone number is: 02 6230 0197

There are an array of cafes serving coffee and lunch options close by, and they are all open on Saturdays (tea, coffee, hot water, milk and biscuits are provided by the ACTWC.) The Harry Hartog team are happy to have you place some food in their fridge, and use their microwave, should you wish to bring your lunch.

Toilets are located just outside the Harry Hartog store, just a few metres away in the Kambri building.

The closest parking to the store is an underground carpark directly below Harry Hartog (with stairs or public lift access to ground level. Staff at Harry Hartog can provide swipe-pass lift access from ground level to the upper level of their store, where the workshop will be held.) Due to the newness of the precinct, this car park isn't clearly marked in maps. To find it, drive down Kingsley Street (off Barry Drive) and follow signage to the Drill Hall Gallery/Drill Hall Gallery parking. Follow Kingsley Street straight down to its culmination in an underground carpark and you will have the correct one. We recommend this parking option for people who cannot or do not wish to cover much ground to the workshop venue. It costs $5 for the whole day on a Saturday. Parking at Llewellyn Hall is a short stroll away.
