Event description

Description

Greetings, Silurians !!

Craig Newmark describes himself as an American internet entrepreneur and philanthropist. But for we Silurians he is best known for the creation of Craigslist, described as a free marketplace where people can come together—without charge—and exchange information … or things. And that’s where Craig Newmark changed the face of American journalism as we knew it. Thanks to Craigslist, but certainly to a host of other places where sellers and advertisers can meet their customers online, a vastly lucrative market that had sustained a myriad of newspapers for much of the existence of the American republic, evaporated in an historical nanosecond. Today, however, Craig has put the wealth he generated through this and a myriad of other ideas, to work most constructively. He bankrolled, to the tune of many millions of dollars, what is now the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York!

For our forthcoming event, we are privileged to have with us in conversation Craig himself and the extraordinary woman who now leads the institution he has underwritten, Sarah Bartlett, dean of the Craig Newmark school and veteran journalist—a career that’s spanned Fortune, BusinessWeek, and The New York Times, as well as editor-in-chief of Oxygen Media.

Both will be with us for an amazing lunch on December 19. To make sure no one is disappointed, I importune you to register early !

The date: Wednesday, December 19, 2018

The time: Noon

The place: National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South

Remember: We are now using Eventbrite to handle our luncheon reservations. Michael Serrill, our 1st vice-president, is no longer accepting email reservations. There is no charge to use this service unless you choose to pay in advance for your ticket with a credit card.

You will then receive an email confirmation.

You can still reserve by calling the Silurians' reservation line at 212-532-0887. Please spell your name clearly and include a contact number or e-mail. Lunch prices are $55 for members, $65 for guests, payable at the door by cash (exact change, please), check or credit card. And if you’re bringing a guest, make sure to give the guest’s name. Each member can bring one guest, with additional guests put on waiting lists. We will try to seat everyone!

One other, important reminder. Because we must give a final tally to our hosts at the National Arts Club at noon on the Monday of the luncheon, we can accept no cancellations after that moment. And any no-shows will be asked to pay for their seat…which we will have paid for!
