Description

Justice Without Borders is pleased to announce its 2nd annual CPD workshop, “Transnational Civil Litigation in Hong Kong: Seeking Damages for Migrant Workers Post-Return”.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, October 26th, from 12.30pm to 5.00pm, at Room 901 of Cheng Yu Tower, the University of Hong Kong.

This workshop will be co-hosted by Herbert Smith Freehills, the Centre for Comparative and Public Law at HKU, and Justice Without Borders (“JWB”), a not-for-profit organisation that supports victims of labour exploitation and human trafficking in seeking just compensation against their abusers, even after returning home.

This workshop aims to introduce the wide variety of private law issues that migrant workers encounter in Hong Kong and upon their return home. The program includes a panel discussion on migrant worker civil litigation, as well as a discussion on the role of law firms and lawyers in pursuing migrant worker claims. It will be followed by an interactive case study session, and conclude with a sharing session by unions, charitable organisations and NGOs on the opportunities available for participants to get involved in meaningful pro bono legal work.

The event is free for attendees, but attendance will be capped at 40 participants to ensure active participation, so please save your spot as soon as possible. Preference will be given to lawyers, both locally qualified and international lawyers. Participants may claim CPD Points* for this workshop -- please remember to indicate if you wish to claim CPD points during checkout. We would greatly appreciate registration by no later than Friday, October 20th.

We encourage anyone with an interest in migrant workers' rights to attend, and to share this workshop with those in your network.

*CPD accreditation for the workshop has been submitted to the Hong Kong Law Society. We expect accreditation to be approved by 20 Oct 2017.

Note: This is an elementary-level CPD workshop intended for lawyers who are new to the area of practice in civil litigation for migrant workers. The course content is largely the same as the 2016 CPD workshop titled “Private Remedies for International Migrant Workers in the 21st Century: A Legal Education Workshop on Cross-Border Civil Litigation,” also co-hosted by JWB.
