Event description

Welcome to the first Coyote Valley BioBlitz! Together we will visit Coyote Valley and expand our knowledge of the valley's plants and animals. A BioBlitz is an event where nature lovers and experts come together to explore an area, and document observations of all living things in a short period of time: plants, bugs, reptiles, mammals, and birds. It is a family oriented event - everyone over the age of 4 is welcome, and no previous experience is needed.

We will use the iNaturalist smart phone app to record our observations (birders may use eBird). We have already started and you can explore some of the local flora and fauna by accessing our Coyote Valley San Jose project page. We recommend downloading the app to your iPhone or Android in advance and creating a free account. You can even practice using it in your backyard or local park. This way you'll be ready to start recording observations as soon as you arrive! No worry, however - we will provide guidance as needed.

Event details:

8:00-8:15 - Morning Bioblitz registration at the different sites

8:15-9:30 - Walks led by naturalists, field observations

10:00-10:15 - Late morning Bioblitz registration at the different sites

10:15-11:30 - Walks led by naturalists, field observations

If you'd like to explore two sites, please RSVP for both morning and late morning time slot.

We will explore a few different sites in Coyote Valley (between San Jose and Morgan Hill). You will receive the assigned location once you RSVP for the event.

The event is open to the public, but please RSVP so that we can team you up with an expert. Each expert will walk with a small group and help participants make observations on their smart phones. Children ages 4 and up are welcome to join and must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must RSVP prior to the event. You may register up to 5 people per RSVP. Please let us know if you change your mind or can no longer participate, as the number of participants is limited.

What to bring:

- A smart phone or a tablet with iNaturalist or eBird installed on it. You may also bring a camera if you'd like to get better pictures, but you will need a smart phone for the location coordinates.

- Close-toed, comfortable walking shoes

- Reusable water bottles

- Sunscreen and hat

- Snacks (there is no place to get food on site)
