Coyote Ridge OSA Hike
Wednesday, March 11, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Welcome to Open Space. Every year Spring gives rise to an amazing and beautiful wildflower display accompanied by the emergence of thousands of endangered Bay Checkerspot Butterflies. Open Space would love to take you for a hike along the hillsides in a rare serpentine soil habitat to see these beautiful resources. This is an area that is very sensitive and delicate so we only take people up there during the height of Spring. Spring is already here.
Because this hike is about 4 miles long, off trail, across uneven and rough terrain, we must limit the age range to people 12 years old and above. We encourage you to bring water, a light lunch, hiking poles, a hat that ties down (It does get windy), and don't forget your sunscreen. The sun will sneak up on you because of the wonderful breeze that keeps you cool during the walk.
There is a steep portion of this trail when we use a historic fire break and go straight up the side of the hill. We will eat lunch at the top and come back down another fire break. It can be hard on your ankles and knees. If this is a concern, please let us know and we can show you a beautiful area that does not ascend to the top, but has just as amazing views and friendly docents who would love to join you.
We have allotted 5 hours for this hike in order to give people the time and freedom to walk as slowly as they need and to take as many pictures as they want. Please plan accordingly. Negotiating the hillsides takes time in both directions but you won't be disappointed.
Please arrive at the entrance to the Kirby Canyon Landfill at 8:45 am to get a parking space and check in. Please watch out for trucks entering and leaving the landfill, which is only closed on Sunday. The hike will begin at 9:00 am and your docent will guide you. To get to the Kirby Canyon Landfill, please take Hwy 101 (south if coming from san jose) to the Coyote Creek Golf Drive. Head East under the freeway toward the entrance to the landfill. Flip a U and park along the curb or drive up our little dirt driveway and park on the mowed grass. We will be there to help you park.
