Description

Covering Child Welfare Cases, Thurs., Jan 25th

Errol Louis- Room 442

Every year, tens of thousands of cases of abuse or neglect are reported to the City, and each year the city sees an average of 10 to 12 abuse or neglect fatalities. What often follows reports of a tragic fatality is a citywide panic that includes sensational headlines, high-level resignations, political finger-pointing and a sharp increase in kids being removed from their homes--all of which can, ironically, make it even harder to keep children safe. This first-ever workshop will educate reporters, editors and producers about how the city’s complex child welfare system really works, and provide training in how to accurately report on these delicate, heartbreaking cases.
