Course 2: One Day Anti-racism Training (This course include a book)
Goal – to create the opportunity and mechanisms for intentional and meaningful understanding of the ways in which racism continues to affect and infect our community life. We seek to engage this issue, as a community, in real terms and real time. We anticipate that this process will culminate in action.
11:30am Welcome and check in – How do you feel about today? Covenant
11:45am The Box Exercise: Identify problems and approach solutions; not fix blame.
Introduce Wall of History & Article on White Privilege for Tomorrow
12:30pm Individual assignments
A.– What do you like about being White or a Person of Color (break down groups)
B–What events in your personal story shaped your perspective about race and how to deal with people who might be different than you are? Who are the heroes and she-roes in that story? Explain why.
1:00pm – 1:30pm Small Group Storytelling
Identifying the Ghosts of Racism: Tell the hidden backstory of racism that continues to affect your church, city, county, and district. Small Groups/Whole Group
1:30 – 2:00 Culture - Exploring Culture: (20 minutes).
What is it? How do we define it? What makes it up? How do we get culture? Culture is collective socialization; group norms; geographic socialization
2:30pm – 3:00pm Whole group-Trainer Traps. Small Groups, identifying your own Trainer Traps:
Think about having a conversation with family and friends who might find some of the definitions that we discussed before the break uncomfortable or even insulting. What would you do or say to them?
Reflection and closure - what have we accomplished today? What do we still need to do?
