Description

The Institute for Dismantling Racism operates the Freedom Tree Project which is a series of educational trainings designed for individuals, corporations, churches, schools and nonprofits. This monthly trainings is designed for individuals and groups. Participants will receive a book and a Certificate of Completion from The Freedom Tree Project

9:30am I. Ice Breaker, Introductions (15 20 minutes)

10:00am Background Information Our nation has already reached a demographic tipping point, http://www.brookings.edu/blogs/up-front/posts/2011/08/26- census-race-frey (Print this article and put it in the notebook) Over the next three decades people of color will become the majority population in the United States. The purpose of our session today is to begin to learn how to adjust to and manage that change and diversity effectively. One of the ways to do that is to improve our understanding of ourselves, others, and our community. We ask you to be open to learning new things and to treat one another with courtesy and respect. (5 minutes)

10:15am Definitions:

Discrimination, Diversity, Norms, Prejudice, Socialization, Stereotypes (10 minutes)

10:30am Exploring Culture: (20 minutes)
What is it? How do we define it? What makes it up?
How do we get culture?
Culture is collective socialization; group norms; geographic socialization

11:00am Closing Activity My Multicultural Self

Place yourself in the space in the center; identify the five aspects in your own history and culture that have the most impact on how you see things. (Pick a different partner and discuss your selections. (20 minutes)
