Working with couples is not only clinically challenging, but it can be difficult to navigate the added complexities in the areas of billing, documentation, and ethical practice. When can you ethically bill insurance for couples? Who really is your client? Do you need two charts and treatment plans? What does insurance expect? When one member of the couple comes in alone, how do you handle confidentiality, and how do you bill for the session?
This live presentation, applicable to psychotherapists nationwide, will cover practical issues you deal with when working with couples, challenge myths you may have, clarify areas of confusion, and invite you to think more carefully about your current policies.
TOPICS INCLUDE:
- When you can (and can’t) ethically bill insurance for couples therapy
- When will insurance cover couples sessions?
- Common (and costly) billing mistakes for couples
- Billing for longer couples sessions
- Common billing/diagnosis practices that are actually fraud
- Must you choose an identified patient?
- Confidentiality and “no-secrets policies”
- Do you need separate treatment plans and charts?
- Handling record requests/treatment reviews with couples
- Seeing a member of the couple individually
- Changing roles from individual to couples therapist, or vice versa
- What should be in your treatment agreement with couples
- Appropriate couples therapy treatment goals
- Some requirements when seeing couples via video

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
What is the difference between this webinar and the Couples Webinar for sale in your online store? The pre-recorded recording currently available in my online store is from 2021, so this webinar will include updated material. In addition, this is a live presentation -- many people prefer listening to a live presentation so they are able to submit questions to the presenter, and hear answers to questions from other attendees.
Who should attend? This event is designed for all types of psychotherapists nationwide, whether they work for insurance or not, as well as students, trainees, pre-licensed therapists, billers, and front office staff.
How do I get CEs for this event? You must purchase the ticket option that includes CEs. After the webinar, you will automatically be emailed a link to the post-test and evaluation, even if you did not attend live. You may get CEs whether you join live or listen to the recording. Course completion certificates will be emailed immediately after completing the evaluation and passing the post-test with a minimum 70% score. Post test answer keys will not be sent. Barbara Griswold LMFT (CAMFT CE provider #023504) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to provide Continuing Education for California LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs.
