Countermarketing Staff Training

Join us on April 23, 2018 for the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute's Countermarketing Staff Training.

What is countermarketing? Countermarketing uses health communication strategies to reduce the demand for unhealthy products by exposing the motives of their producers. Learn more about countermarketing and download our Youth Food Educators Toolkit on our website.

This countermarketing training is based on the Youth Food Educators (YOFE) model, which we use to train young people to deliver original campaigns against unhealthy foods and beverages and communicate messages about unhealthy food and predatory marketing to their peers. YOFE participants have launched nine community campaigns and delivered presentations to over 500 community members. This training will give organizations the techniques to create their own countermarketing initiatives against unhealthy foods and beverages, and provide them with strategies for cultivating the next generation of youth food justice leaders. This training is geared towards organizations and groups that want to engage youth in countermarketing initaitives. Learn more about countermarketing on our website here and download our Youth Food Educators Toolkit here.

At the end of the training attendees will have an understanding of advertising and targeted marketing, racial/ethnic analyses of food marketing, food countermarketing, and implementing food countermarketing projects and initiatives that engage youth. Attendees will also gain an understanding of how to set realistic goals for youth food countermarketing initiatives/projects, develop a recruitment strategy for staff and youth involved in the initiative, create a tentative program timeline, and receive technical assistance.
