Event description

Description

The Department of Internal Affairs is holding workshops to develop changes to the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993. The changes will look to protect New Zealanders from exposure to violent extremist content online. These changes are part of a broader Government strategy to help counter violent extremism in Aotearoa.

We invite you to take part in a workshop to help the Government understand you and your community's views on any potential changes.

General workshops

  • Auckland Thursday 24 October, 1:30-3:30pm

  • Hamilton Wednesday 30 October, 5:30-7:30pm

  • Christchurch Saturday 2 November, 1:30-3:30pm

  • Wellington (and zoom) Sunday 3 November, 1:30-3:30pm

If you are unable to attend your local workshop in person, you may be able to:

a) attend the Wellington workshop virtually via zoom (please indicate this when you register)

b) attend your local youth workshop (please indicate that you are 25+ when you register)

c) submit written feedback to the DIA (Matthew.McCallum2@dia.govt.nz).

Youth workshops

Youth (16-24 years) have important perspectives not only on the potential harm from internet usage, but also on the benefits that the internet provides in their life. Youth are welcome at the general workshops, but we are also hosting some more informal youth-focused workshops:

  • Christchurch Wednesday 23 October 5:00-6:30pm

  • Auckland Thursday 24 October, 5:30-7pm

  • Hamilton Monday 4 November, 5:00-7:30pm

All workshops will be held in a safe, secure environment. Food and drinks will be provided.
