Webinar description
Counseling with minors can involve confusing ethical and legal requirements in addition to the complex dynamics that can exist when working with both clients and parents; all of which can be difficult to navigate. This webinar provides the information and resources necessary to put effective strategies, policies, and protocols in place that will help avoid legal and ethical problems.
Participants will learn how to ethically navigate child/adolescent-related topics such as:
- Consent and assent
- Confidentiality and minors
- Parental access to records
- State laws
- HIPAA & FERPA
- Divorced parents & parenting plans
- Informed consent (parent and child)
- Special rights of older adolescent
- Boundary issues with minors and their parents
- Social media and minors
In addition, this seminar presents a practical and effective process of ethical decision-making, Dr. Casey's Multiple Perspective Model. Through an interactive small group format, clinical vignettes involving minors are explored using the Model.
Learning objectives
At the end of the webinar participants will be able to:
- Describe select ethical and legal issues unique to working with minors.
- Determine how to effectively navigate codes of ethics, laws, and licensing rules when working with minors.
- Utilize recommended methods for reducing risk and avoiding problems.
