Description

“An enemy is a person whose story we have not heard”
–Gene Knudson Hoffman

“One of the big things that council has shown me is that one of the major parts of communication is listening.
You don’t have to agree, but in listening you give that person dignity.”
–Joseph, Inmate Council Project Participant, California

Council is an age-old practice that involves bringing people together into a type of talking circle for candid and heartfelt conversations. Participants speak one-at-a-time, sharing their personal stories and experiences, rather than opinions, and listen intently while others do the same. Sharing and listening to universal stories about love, loss, fear, and hope enables participants to recognize that, despite their many differences, they have much in common.

By fostering attentive listening and authentic expression, Council builds positive relationships between participants and neutralizes hierarchical dynamics formed by the inequality of status, race, or other social factors. It supports a deep sense of community and fosters recognition of a shared humanity and interconnectedness. It enables individuals to give voice to their stories, develop mutual respect, cultivate a compassionate response to anger, defensiveness, and violence, as well as strengthen emotional health and resilience.

Council Training 1 (CT1) is a 16-hour offering, led by two certified Council Trainers, is a powerful and inspiring introduction to the practice of Council and offers an experiential opportunity to work with the basic elements, modalities and forms. Council Training 1 (CT1) workshops are offered by Center for Council throughout the year in a variety of locations.

In CT1 workshops, participants develop their fluency with and capacity to practice and offer Council, and to bring this practice into their personal lives, communities and professions. In CT1, the history, fundamentals and nuances of the forms and modalities of Council are explored in some depth and a good deal of background is offered on the intentions and language used in the practice.

In addition to a grounding in the basic procedures and tools of Council, broader applications to a variety of settings are explored, including classrooms, boardrooms, prisons, communities — as well as in more intimate settings like families and couples. CT1 workshops attract educators, artists, business people, therapists, social service workers and many others
