Event description

Description

Corkscrew will host a local Butterfly Orientation Workshop and Walk on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 from 9am - 12 noon. This workshop will begin in the classroom of our Blair Audubon Center and will help participants learn more about local butterflies and their host plants and how to identify commonly seen species. We will also go on an outdoor excursion into different habitats to practice identification skills. Participants will need to sign a release form. Participants should dress for the weather, wear comfortable close-toed walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a water bottle, and binoculars. We have binoculars we can lend out to those who do not have a pair.

Attendance at this training is free, with the option to pay admission if you wish to explore the Sanctuary's boardwalk on your own afterwards.

People with an interest in helping survey our local butterflies are invited to join us on Thursday, October 26, 2017 for Corkscrew's Fall NABA butterfly survey. You do not have to be an expert at butterfly identification to participate, in fact it is a great way to start learning the butterflies of the area. Amateurs and experts team up in this citizen science effort to identify and record all the butterflies they can within our count circle.

There is a $3 participation fee for all participants in NABA (North American Butterfly Association) counts.

Register to participate in the Fall butterfly survey via Eventbrite

Corkscrew's annual butterfly count is part of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) butterfly surveys that are conducted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Each NABA count circle is a 15 mile diameter circle, ours includes Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and part of Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) and the surrounding area. Every year approximately 450 North American butterfly counts, including about 60 Florida counts, are submitted to NABA whose annually published reports provide a tremendous amount of information about the geographical distribution and relative population sizes of the species counted.

Interested participants should contact Sally Stein, Corkscrew NABA Butterfly Compiler, for more information to help with the Corkscrew Fall NABA butterfly survey.
