Event Details

Core Element Summer STEM Camps for 2018 will offer students and teachers the opportunity to grow STEM skills and knowledge and become more aware of career opportunities in a variety of STEM fields including, but not limited to Engineering and Computer Sciences. Participants can expect a fun and busy week which offers “hands-on” STEM learning, team building and critical skills in reasoning and analytical thinking that will offer students important career skills.

All camps are 5 days each and run Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Each session has a $350 fee with a $25 non-refundable administration fee required at time of registration. Final payment of the balance ($325.00) will be due by May 31, 2018 (see the link in your order confirmation).

This year's Summer STEM Camp will have five one-week sessions to choose from:

  1. Jr. STEM Camp- Coding/EVO Robotics
  2. Coding Camp
  3. Jr. STEM Camp - WEDO/ LittleBits
  4. Introduction to LEGO EV3 Robotics
  5. Arduino Microcomputer Processing

 Camp promotes computational thinking and social skills:

  •  Involves creating, experimenting, testing, revising ideas, and reflection. Through creative play, campers will gain a deeper understanding of the coding process.
  • Campers will develop important social skills such as communication, collaboration and teamwork!
  • Activities will be a mix of guided and self-directed learning in a fun and active environment!

 Junior STEM Camp- Scratch Programming/Ozobot Robotics

June 11-15

Students grades 3-5

  • Learn Scratch programming language to program interactive stories, games and animations. Scratch is a project of the MIT Media Lab.
  • Program Ozobot Evo Robots—use drawing and color to code and learn to create block-based programs using Ozobot Evo Robots and OzoBlockly programming.

Coding Camp

June 18-22, 2018

Grades 6-11

Learn to code by building and deploying your very own web games using popular web based technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and create graphics with Canvas API.

  • No prior programming experience required.

  • Games run in a browser on any platform!

  • Design, program, and launch your own web games

  • Deploy your creations to the internet to share with friends.

  • Create your own 2d sprite sheets and sound effects for use in your game

  • Learn the fundamentals of computer programming by making games.

  • Use popular web technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Canvas.

  • Develop algorithms that define a game’s rules and logic.

  • Learn the common architecture of a video game from the ground up.

  • Team-based programming projects!

Jr. STEM Camp- WEDO Robotics/littleBits

June 25-29, 2018

Grades 3-5

 Campers will utilize three different STEM applications to introduce engineering and programming skills and to develop teamwork and critical-thinking skills.

 1.      WEDO™ Robotics

Campers will use LEGO™ WEDO robotics kits to explore robotics while they build working models that incorporate working motors and sensors; program their models to complete specific tasks; and explore theme-based activities while developing their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

 2.    littleBits™

Campers will explore electronics, circuits and creative design with littleBits electronic modules. The littleBits platform of electronic building blocks is comprised of color-coded electronic modules for specific functions (like motion, lights, sound, sensors, and internet connectivity) that snap together to make larger circuits. Campers will engage in projects which develop STEM literacy and critical thinking skills, and foster creativity.

Introduction to EV3 Robotics

July 16-20, 2018

Grades 4-8

Campers will learn how to build and program autonomous robots using LEGO™ EV3™ robots and MINDSTORMS™ Education Software. Participants in this weeklong session will get instruction and hands-on practice with activities that will allow them to build and program robots. Participants will get information, tips and ideas on how to enhance their team competition experiences. Campers work in small teams to promote FIRST© Lego League’s signature set of Core Values.

Arduino Microcomputer Programming

July 23-27, 2018

Grades 6-11

Interested in coding, computers and engineering??

  • Gain new skills in coding and electronics engineering.

  • Learn to work with an Arduino™ to combine components like lights, motors, and sensors.

  • Immerse yourself in the basics of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering while learning how to use basic circuits and code.

  • Experiment with different types of circuits to learn how robots interpret inputs from sensors and human commands.
  • Use code with microprocessors and electronic components to automate tasks.

The camp will provide campers with an introduction to the microcomputer programming using Arduinos. Campers will design, build and program the Arduino to complete specific tasks culminating in a Arduino Showcase Day presentation.

All Camps:

STEM Career Explorations

All Core Element Summer STEM camps provide an opportunity for students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and to learn about how math and science proficiency is increasingly a critical skill for current and future jobs. It is becoming increasingly apparent that science and math proficiency are the new “must-haves” for jobs outside of the usual STEM fields including positions in the hospitality, construction and services sectors.

Meet with STEM professionals to:

  • Explore STEM career possibilities;
  • Gain resources in creating mentor relationships;
  • Learn how to equate interest in math or science into possible career opportunities;
  • Learn general job requirements for a specific career path;
  • Learn more about careers with an opportunity for financial growth;
  • Gain a better understanding of scope and variety of career possibilities within the same business or field.
