Copy of Against the Evil that Roams the Land
Event Information
About this event
Ever find yourself curious about Old English and Old Norse/Icelandic purification and protection methods? (I know, strange question, right?)
But if you do, then why not join me for Against the Evil that Roams the Land: Practices of Protection and Purification from the OE and ON/Icelandic Sources ?!
In this online class, we'll be taking a deep dive into all things magico-medical; dusting off the old manuscripts; and entering into a world of unseen beings, herbal allies, and spoken magic. It's a world that has sadly gone largely unnoticed by many modern Heathens, Witches, and Pagans. But it's one that is not only surprisingly rich in magical tech, but will encourage you to think about the world around you differently. (In a good way, I promise!)
Topics to be covered:
- Modern ideas on purification vs older perspectives
- Possible Heathen period ideas of sickness
- Physical symptoms of magical attack from either human or otherworldly assailants
- Smoke fumigation (recels) in Leechbook III
- The use of salves for ridding a person of malign influence
- The use of narrative charms for cursing and/or banishing possessing forces
- Protection in the Heathen period
- Methods of ritually delineating boundaries
- Some common amulets
- Deconstruction of several 10th and 11th century charms/procedures + suggestions for adaptation for modern practice
Participants will receive an invite to the live class (the day before the class), a recording after the class, and a pdf with (re?)Heathenized versions of the charms/procedures covered during the class. PDF will be delivered at the same time as the invite.
