Coptic binding is a hard cover binding consisting of multiple sections of paper sewn together with a chain link stitch that can be seen on the exposed spine. This is an old technique used as early as the 2nd century. This simple non-adhesive binding showcases the craftsmanship that goes into making it and once mastered can easily be done easily at home. Coptic bound books are loved for their ability to lay flat and open 360 degrees, making them great journals, sketchbooks, and travel companions. This one day workshop is a great foundational education into the world of book binding. All materials are provided and students will create and leave with their very own coptic sewn book.
Note: We will be gluing decorative paper to the covers of your book. If you have paper you created in the paper marbling workshop or decorative paper of your own, feel free to bring them along!
