The New York State Office of Victim Services (OVS) in partnership with the Institute for Disaster Mental Health at SUNY New Paltz (IDMH), present, Coping with Grief in Traumatic Loss: Theoretical Perspectives and Interventive Strategies, a two-session virtual training on January 20 & 27, 2021 at 10:00am EST.

Led by Dr. Kenneth Doka, Professor Emeritus at The College of New Rochelle and Senior Consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America, this free, two-part online workshop will explore the most current theoretical perspectives on loss and will review of basic grief concepts and research on grief interventions.

Throughout both days, participants are assisted to assess the sensitivity of theoretical perspectives and interventive techniques to the populations with whom they work. The seminar will also stress the ways that culture, spirituality, gender, and development affect the grieving process and the selection of interventive approaches. Each session is 3 hours long. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory in order to receive Continuing Education Hours.

Target Audience

This program is open to licensed NYS Mental Health Providers and/or clinical program graduate students from OVS-funded organizations.

The workshop would be useful to a range of professionals who counsel persons who are bereaved including psychologists, counselors, clergy, social workers, nurses and other health care workers, as well as educators, teachers and school-based personnel. It would have special resonance with those who work with victims of traumatic loss especially that of homicide.

Continuing Education Eligibility

Social Work Continuing Education (6) hours and Licensed Mental Health Counselor Continuing Education (6) hours will be provided to those who meet eligible criteria. Participants must attend both sessions and be present throughout the sessions. Attendance will be taken 6 times (once per hour) via the chat feature of the video platform.
