Event description

Description

Topic: Role of Acute Care in the Opioid Epidemic

Presenter: Dr. Joceline Vu, General Surgery resident at the University of Michigan

Presentation Summary:

Opioid dependence is the most significant public health threat in the United States. Although the opioid epidemic has received tremendous attention, current policy efforts, including the 2016 CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, have largely focused on opioid prescribing for chronic pain. The Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network is a preventative model that aims to curb new opioid dependence in patients treated for acute pain by tailoring prescribing practices and minimizing excess opioids available for misuse and diversion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce Michigan OPEN, a partnership between Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to curb opioid dependence, misuse, and abuse by targeting opioid naïve surgical and dental patients prior to opioid dependence, as well as reduce excess unused opioids in our community

  • Share the Michigan OPEN model for creating change and disseminating best practices in opioid prescribing and disposal

  • Understand the role of acute care opioid prescribing in the opioid epidemic and identify ways to change clinical practice
