Event description

Description

Edna Lewis was born in 1916 in the small farming settlement of Freetown, Orange County, Virginia. She is the granddaughter of an emancipated slave who helped start the community. As a young woman she moved to New York City, where after a series of jobs, she helped to to open Café Nicholson in Manhattan’s East Side. She became a local legend and cooked for many celebrities such as Marlon Brando, Salvador Dali, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Truman Capote. When looking back at her journey, Lewis plainly said "As a child in Virginia, I thought all food tasted delicious. After growing up, I didn't think food tasted the same, so it has been my lifelong effort to try and recapture those good flavors of the past." Her dedication to real food and flavor lent to the legitimacy of Southern cuisine and inspired a generation of Southern, female, and African American chefs.

We welcome you to the Caromont Kitchen to cook a meal inspired by Edna. We will use local, seasonal ingredients and "The Taste of Country Cooking" as a guideline for our menu. Gail Hobbs-Page, owner of Caromont, cheesemaker and chef, will lead this hands-on workshop and we will sit down to a shared meal around the farm table.
