Conversations in Black Freedom Studies: Freedom North: The Black Freedom Struggle in New York
Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM (EDT)
New York, NY
Join us for the third installement of Conversations in Black Freedom Studies: "Freedom North: The Black Freedom Struggle in New York" with Brian Purnell and Clarence Taylor.
While conventional narratives of the Civil Rights Movement frame the heroic movement as Southern, research over the past decade has shown otherwise: A robust and diverse struggle in the Northeast, Midwest and West that occurred alongside the Southern struggle. Clarence Taylor (editor of Civil Rights in New York City and author of Reds at the Blackboard) and Brian Purnell (author of Fighting Jim Crow in the County of Kings) remind us that one of the key fronts was here in New York itself. Professors Taylor and Purnell show us Jim Crow New York and detail movements across the boroughs for equal and excellent schooling, open and affordable housing, job opportunities, responsive policing, and a fair criminal justice system.
Please join us for "Freedom North: The Black Freedom Struggle in New York," looking at the the many battles local activists waged here in the city to challenge inequality in the Big Apple.
This new education series is presented by Education at the Schomburg. The Spring 2013 series is curated by Jeanne Theoharis (Brooklyn College) and Komozi Woodard (Sarah Lawrence College).
