About this Event

Session 3: Learning and Doing When College Isn’t Your First Next Step

Tuesday, January 12, 2021, 7-8 p.m. EST

Who Should Attend: Families looking for information and vetted transition resources, school district professionals responsible for supporting students through transition, educators/counselors seeking information to better support students through transition, providers looking to expand their networks

After graduating from high school, you may be looking forward to beginning a career. Perhaps, you are interested instead in taking a year to create a stronger application for college, or you may want to explore a different path through an apprenticeship or gap year.

You could have a passion driving you in a particular direction. You may want to learn a particular set of skills, or you may want to explore a nontraditional hybrid of learning and doing. Many very successful people choose alternative paths and many find ways to continue learning and growing while also developing independence and marketable skills.

Success and happiness take many forms, but stepping off the beaten path requires a plan and a network of support. Our panelists will share their thoughts on options other than college for the recent graduate and how to know if that’s the right fit for you.

Moderator: Elon Fyfield, educator, community activist and influencer

Our Expert Panelists:

Alex Tsonas, Director, Seaport Academy

Eileen Brody Burke, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission

Questions: Contact Denise Moorehead at info@schoolsforchildreninc.org

About the Series

Students who have overcome learning and other challenges look to their upcoming high school graduation with excitement and a well-earned sense of achievement — mixed with a bit of trepidation about life after high school. Schools for Children is proud to present three evenings of panel discussions designed for families with students ready for what happens next after high school — and wondering how to manage the process of taking these next steps successfully.
