Description

Multiple Locations - Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Join Roshi Joan Halifax, PhD, Founder, Abbot, Head Teacher, Upaya Institute and Zen Center, Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a two-part conversation around Cultivating Compassion.

At a time when more than half of U.S. physicians show at least one sign of burnout, compassion is an important feature of well-being. Compassion is characterized by insight, the intention to end suffering, and “attentional balance” – the capacity to attend both to others and to ourselves. Research suggests that compassion may enhance resilience. Cultivating compassion has potential benefits to both health professionals and the patients they seek to heal.

Lunch Seminar: Exploring a Radical Vision of Compassion | 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | The Ecumenical Center | 8310 Ewing Halsell | San Antonio, TX 78229

Compassion fatigue is a pervasive concern among health care providers in a wide variety of clinical settings.

Learning Objective: Participants will explore a practical, context-sensitive model for cultivating compassion through interactions with others.

Evening Lecture: Standing at the Edge: Finding Freedom Where Fear and Courage Meet | 5:00 p.m. (Reception) | 6:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m (Lecture) UT Health San Antonio | Pestana Lecture Hall 3.104A | 7703 Floyd Curl | San Antonio, TX 78229

The traits that drive health professionals to end suffering can have darker sides. For example, engagement can give way to burnout, and empathy can turn to empathic distress.

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn strategies for harnessing compassion to develop resiliency and capacity to attend to others.
