Conversation Piece: Crush & Jam
An inclusive discussion-based event, inspired by our current exhibition, Kick over the statues, with complimentary refreshments and relaxed atmosphere.
Join Lorenza Ippolito and Amy Sutherland from Brighton Rockers for a crash course in subversive feminist subculture. Modern roller derby is a thriving and popular international sport, set up by all-female volunteers who share a strong "do it yourself" ethic that combines athleticism with punk aesthetics.
Kick over the statues documents young Londoners along the route of the 2016 Notting Hill Carnival. Photographer Ewen Spencer has sought to shine a light on the existence of youth tribes and style for the past 20 years, and has found that modern youth cultures are becoming more elusive and undefinable than ever; disappearing into the urban fabric.
Visibility can become a double edged sword for some; the submerging of these cultures might mean that there is a need for a different type of visibility, giving exclusivity and also protecting a fragile identity. Or maybe some subcultures simply want to create a space of their own away from patriarchal narratives which sees women's role in society or their appearance as very specific, mainly delicate, dainty and polite with a side of sex and child-bearing.
Tuesday 1 November, 2-3.30pm. Free entry, donations welcome
