Event Details

This highly interactive workshop builds practical skills that faculty can implement in their teaching. It can be particularly helpful in preparing for and addressing difficult situations that may arise related to today’s social and political climate.  From tweaking your syllabus to rewording your assignments, the workshop focuses heavily on the use of language, wording, and tone in the learning environment. Faculty will leave with new techniques they can implement right away or over time to improve classroom civility, to promote honest conversations, and to highlight common ground on sensitive topics. This workshop applies various conflict mediation techniques to face-to-face and hybrid learning environments.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, faculty will be able to:

  • Negotiate rules of engagement in the classroom with their students
  • Build trust with their students
  • Make smart word choices in a syllabus, learning activity, or facilitated dialogue
  • Implement mediation techniques in their teaching style
  • Bring more peace into their classroom

This workshop may be counted toward the Diversity cluster of the Achievement in Pedagogy badge, offered through the Graduate Student Teaching Initiative. For more information, see: http://www.teaching.pitt.edu/teaching-support/ta-services/achievement-in-pedagogy-badge// or contact tahelp@pitt.edu
