ContraBanned 2018: an uncensored celebration of the Library
Saturday, September 29, 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Historic Central Library, 14 W. 10th Street

In a time when separation and division feels front and center in our world, ContraBanned brings people together to celebrate our right to read and our freedom to access knowledge, unrestricted. While banning books silences stories, the Library empowers people to find their voice and doesn't censor the stories you'll find on our shelves.

This year, proceeds from the event and any donations raised now will help the Library create a Refugee & Immigrant Services & Empowerment (RISE) Center at the Library's North-East Branch, a free, safe space in the heart of the Northeast neighborhood.

Don't let stories be silenced. Get your tickets to ContraBanned today.

Your ContraBanned ticket includes: Entrance to the event in Kirk Hall and the rooftop (members gain early entrance at 6:30 p.m.), hors d'oeuvres and entertainment, as well as signature drinks provided by Tom's Town Distilling Co. and KC Bier Co.

ContraBanned features include: DJ Raw Bert playing 1950s & '60s banned tunes from his killer vinyl collection; emcee extraordinaire Jake Jacobson; a Resist! (the urge to blink) Photo Station; a Happening instigated by storyteller and artist David Wayne Reed; and a nightcap and midnight snack provided by Carlos Mortera and The Bite on the Library's rooftop terrace.

Dress Code: Unrestricted cocktail attire, although literary puns, characters, and themes will never ever be banned.

“It's not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers.” Judy Blume
